Butaleja, May 28, 2024 – Action 4 Health Uganda joins partners to commemorate Menstrual Hygiene Day 2024 in Butaleja District, under the theme TOGETHER FOR A PERIOD-FRIENDLY WORLD, highlighting the crucial need for proper menstrual hygiene for all young girls and women.
Promoting Menstrual Hygiene
Proper menstrual hygiene extends beyond providing sanitary products; it also involves education on usage, good hygiene practices during menstruation, and safe disposal of used products. This includes changing sanitary pads every eight hours, washing reusable pads with soap and clean water, and drying them under direct sunlight.
Action 4 Health Uganda recognizes the challenges encountered by girls and women in remote and underserved communities of Uganda. These include lack of access to sanitary products to use during menstruation, lack of proper disposal facilities, and myths and misconceptions held about menstruation that hinder girls from participating in day-to-day activities.
Bridging the Gap
A4HU empowers young girls and women, particularly those in rural areas and facing period poverty, with skills to make reusable pads. Our initiative, MAKAPADS, in Malangala sub-county, Mityana District, aims to increase access to sanitary products and bridge the availability gap. We also create awareness to break these existing myths and misconceptions about menstruation.
A Dignified Menstrual Experience for All
In so doing, we are enabling every girl and woman, especially in remote and underserved areas of Uganda, to have a dignified menstrual experience, stay in school even during menstruation, and break myths and misconceptions surrounding menstruation. Together, we can create a #periodfriendlyworld.
END.
