Action 4 Health Uganda, supported by Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevölkerung (DSW), recently renovated the building that now houses the Youth Corner at Kitebi Health Centre III in the Rubaga Division of Kampala District. The new space, commissioned on 29th August 2024, is dedicated to offering young people in the area a range of specialized and youth-friendly health services. These services include antenatal and post-natal care for teenage mothers, HIV testing, STI screening and treatment, family planning services, PEP and PREP, post-abortion care, health education, safe deliveries, safe male circumcision, counseling, and assistance for victims of sexual and gender-based violence. These vital services are available to young people between 10 and 25.

The District Medical Officer of Rubaga Division, Dr. Denis Buluma, observed a growing number of young people accessing health services at the facility, currently averaging 3,000 monthly. This initiative has undoubtedly helped alleviate the strain on the overall health facility by providing dedicated, accessible care to the youth in the community.

The youth of Kampala Youth Empowerment Centre had this to say about the new space, which includes their own office. “The Youth Corner has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a cramped and outdated space with limited resources to a vibrant and inclusive hub embodying youth-friendly health services. Previously, young people had limited access to sexual and reproductive health rights services. The new space offers a one-stop destination  resources,, and comprehensive SRHR services provided by trained and supportive staff and peer educators. This transformation not only empowers young people to take control of their health and well-being but also fosters a sense of community and connection among peers, inspiring hope for a brighter future.” The feedback is a testament to this initiative’s impact and connection with the youthful community. “This new space will go a long way in easing the youth-led and focused work of the Youth Empowerment Centre. We are deeply grateful to Action 4 Health Uganda for this development envisaged to empower youths, to DSW-Germany; DANKE from the young people in Uganda.” Reagan Kulubya, Publicity Officer, Kampala Youth Empowerment Centre.

The Youth Corner was also gifted a brand-new television screen to broadcast age-appropriate video documentaries on various sexual reproductive health rights topics. This will also help to create awareness among young people about their sexual reproductive health and rights.

Investing in spaces that prioritize young people’s health is crucial to our mandate of inspiring them to realize their full potential.
