MALE FLYING NURSES BRINGING YOUTH FRIENDLY FAMILY PLANNING SERVICES CLOSER TO THE YOUTH IN MITYANA DISTRICT

The Flying Nurses aka BEES is a social marketing model being run by Action 4 Health Uganda under the TeamUp Uganda program in Mityana District. This model seeks to bring youth friendly family planning services closer to the youth in remote areas of the district at an affordable cost. In so doing, the distance to health facilities to seek for the same services is shortened, and convenience assured. The fear of access is also removed as services are brought closer to the young people. We linked up with Ivan Lukunyangha, one of two Flying Nurses in Namungo Sub-County and below is his story.

In Namungo Sub-County, Mityana District, Ivan Lukunyangha, a dedicated male Flying Nurse, plays a pivotal role in improving access to youth-friendly family planning services in his community. His clinic is located along a bumpy, dusty road, approximately two kilometers from health center. His location helps to bridge the distance that community members would have to trek to access health services at the sub-county health center. Ivan’s clinic and drug shop provide essential medical care, mainly focused on family planning.

Ivan serves a steady influx of one to two young individuals daily who seek family planning services. The most popular products include Kiss Condoms for men and Depo-Provera for women. This trend indicates a significant increase in the community’s awareness and demand for accessible family planning services, products, and information.

Trained as a health worker, Ivan joined the Flying Nurses project in October 2024 after comprehensive training that equipped him with the necessary skills to fulfill his responsibilities. Reflecting on his impactful journey, Ivan shared, “Becoming a Flying Nurse has opened a door of opportunity for me by providing family planning commodities that were previously unavailable in my community, despite the existing demand.” His journey highlights the importance of dedication to community health and promoting informed, safe family planning choices.

Ivan’s role is significant; it addresses a crucial community need while providing him with a sustainable source of income. He actively participates in community activities and events to promote family planning products, enhancing his outreach and sales.

With the support of fellow Flying Nurses, health workers, the village health team, and youth from the Namungo Youth Empowerment Centre, Ivan has successfully implemented the Flying Nurses project, which aims to deliver family planning commodities to young people at low costs. This initiative not only empowers youth to take control of their health and protect themselves against STIs/STDs but also helps in preventing unwanted pregnancies. Moreover, it creates a supportive environment where families can confidently plan their futures.
